Holst's intense little chamber piece works well in the theatre, and here was given a very highly regarded Scottish premiere, in company with an equally quirky, but very different piece by the same composer.

The Scotsman of Saturday, ! December (p9) reviewed the previous evening's Gustav Holst double bill of Savitri and The Perfect Fool:

'There has been nothing more gratifying in connection with the present brilliant little season of opera at the King's Theatre than the success which has attended the performance of  the four works by British composers included in the season's repertory. Last night Mr Gustav Holst's Savitri and The Perfect Fool attracted a crowded  and enthusiastic audience on the occasion of their first performance in Edinburgh.  Both operas were described in these columns a little over three weeks ago on the occasion of their performance in Glasgow and it may suffice to recall that Savitri is based upon an episode in the Indian epic The Mahabharata, in which a wife, Savitri, by her devotion and fearlessness, prevails upon Death to spare her husband.

'It is a strikingly unconventional little work, in which the customary devices of opera are all discarded, and the voices of the woman, the husband, Death, an unseen chorus, and a very small orchestra are intertwined in the fashioning of a web of singularly original and touching music.  With Miss Eda Bennie as Savitri,  Mr Frederic Collier as Death, and Mr Browning Mummery as the husband, last night's performance was full of charm, and at the fall of the curtain there were many recalls of the three artists.'  

 

BNOC in Scotland - 1923 (Spring & Autumn)

The company's Spring visit lasted five weeks - two in Edinburgh (King's Theatre) and three in Glasgow (at the Coliseum, as the Theatre Royal was not available).

Returning in the autumn, the visit again lasted five weeks - four in Glasgow (this time at the Theatre Royal) and one in Edinburgh (King's Theatre).
