This Festival has three residences by star orchestras, the British representative being the LSO. The German Requiem has not featured in the Edinburgh Festival Chorus's programme for several years. Even so, it may be that some of the choristers are keen to try something new. Sir Simon Rattle has always been an enthusiast for the music of Karol Szymanowski, and so the concert will open with his Stabat Mater, for which the Chorus will learn a Polish text. The soloist for this is the Polish mezzo Hanna Hipp, already a familiar and frequent visitor to Scottish Opera.
The baritone soloist in the Brahms is Florian Boesch, who has already appeared here a few times. The soprano is new.
