This was the final revival of the superb Pountney staging from 1976. For the first time it was sung in English, using the old translation by Frederick Jameson as updated for the 1968 Sadler's Wells production. It was therefore already familiar to Alberto Remedios, singing the part in Scotland for the first time, and to Norman Bailey and Thomas Hemsley. The other principals were attempting their roles for the first time. Several of the small roles were taken by singers who had been with the production from the beginning. and it all seemed nearly as successful as before, the only sign of economy being that the final scene looked less crowded.
