Ian Watt-Smith's cheerful, minimalist 1971 production of The Barber settled neatly into the touring repertoire with several cast changes slotting into place. It was not seen at the first and fifth venues of the spring tour, Stirling and Perth.

Catherine Wilson had previously sung Rosina with Sadler's Wells, at the beginning of her career as a mezzo. She now usually sang soprano roles - which version did she choose this time?

The July week at the Edinburgh Lyceum allowed it to play in repertoire with the other Beaumarchais staging - the first revival of Anthony Besch's excellent Figaro production.
