Giles Havergal, long-term director of the Citizens' Theatre, had, unbelievably, not worked with Scottish Opera before. When he did, at last, he might have been expected to do something modern or controversial. However this traditional production was delightful, given two runs in its opening season, first in February, then returning with some cast changes in the spring. The staging returned occasionaly in later seasons, and actually improved on revival, due to careful choice of performers and attention to detail in rehearsal. No sense of routine was ever allowed to intrude.
