Fledermaus 1935Carl Rosa Opera Company

Read more about the opera Fledermaus

The Carl Rosa had not hitherto been known as the home of Viennese operetta, but this Fledermaus seems to have enjoyed enough success for the company to add The Gipsy Baron within a year or two. It was a new production, credited to Kingsley Lark, though no designers are mentioned.

Even so, it seems a strange choice for kicking off the one week season in Edinburgh, when Faust was being reserved for the Saturday night. However the scheduling of the operetta on the opening night was repeated the following week in Glasgow.

Cast details are from programmes in Edinburgh City Library and the A M Gardiner collection at the Mitchell Library. There is also one for the performance on 25 March at Glasgow Theatre Royal in the national Library of Scotland. If only other performances were as well documented!
