There can't have been many visits by the Carl Rosa that failed to include a performance of Faust, still a hugely popular piece at this time. It seemed in the nineteen-sixties that it had reached the end of its useful life, but after a decade or two of reasonable obscurity it resurfaced, and, while it is hard to imagine it could ever regain the level of popularity it used to have, it is now much appreciated by audiences and directors.
A review appeared in the Scotsman (26 March). "It is long since a better faust than Mr John torney has been heard in Edinburgh. He has a magnificent voice with great freedom in its upper register, and the effortless beauty of his singing in the Garden Scene was a revelation...Miss Helen Ogilvie has that priceless quality in a singer, the suggestion of youthful freshness. vocally and dramatically..."

This was part of Carl Rosa Opera's 1937 tour. (They had missed out visiting Scotland in 1936).
A conventional repertoire was presented for a week at the King's Theatre Edinburgh, followed by two weeks at the King's Theatre Glasgow.
