David Pountney's memorable Meistersinger production was constantly revived in its early years with relatively few cast changes. Opening in Glasgow in December 1976, it toured in the following spring and returned for further winter performances at the Theatre Royal. At these two performances in Edinburgh a few months later, Norman Bailey, unusually, was unwell, and two singers new to the production took over, one from London, the other from Frankfurt. Gerwyn Morgan was scheduled to appear as Pogner, allowing Donald Maxwell to come in as the Nightwatchman.
