The Scotsman (31 March) reviewed the first Edinburgh performance, saying it had the advantage of a credible Violetta in Elena Danieli. The reviewer thought the second act not drasmatically credible, though the audience seemed quite willing to suspend disbelief.
Miss Danieli seemed to get better as the evening wore on "and her death scene captured a great deal of the atmosphere of the situation - an atmosphere which must be pretty strong to withstand the dreadful effect of such flat-footed English as:'If you sleep, you will soon be convalescent.' Surely something could be done about that without any serious violation of the Dumas-Verdi tradition. The word ''convalescent' is about as easily assimilable in a scene of great dramatic tension as a hot-water bottle would be. Ivan Dixon played the thankless part of Alfred with a voice that sounded somewhat hard and strained, and he overdid to an embarrassing degree the sobbing in the second act.
The smaller roles were capably filled and there was some individuality in Arthur Hammond's conducting which might have been even more effective had it not so often seemed to be trying out the theory of the invisible beat."
The cast is taken from a programme for 14 April in Aberdeen City Library.
The Carl Rosa 1948 tour involved two weeks in Edinburgh, then one in Aberdeen and four Glasgow; seven weeks of seven performances each week. The repertoire consisted of works by Rossini (Barber of Seville); Verdi (Trovatore, Traviata); Puccini (Bohème, Tosca, Butterfly) and Bizet (Carmen)
