Scottish Opera's 2002-03 season was dominated by the continuation of its production by Tim Albery of The Ring. The third instalment, Siegfried, opened at the 2002 Festival, followed by performances in Glasgow, with Götterdämmerung scheduled for the Spring. Complete cycles were planned for the 2003 Edinburgh Festival and the opening of the main Glasgow autumn season.
The non-Wagner repertoire consisted of a revived Fledermaus and new Orfeo ed Euridice in the autumn, along with a medium-scale Bohème. The new year saw a performances of Rigoletto, with The Magic Flute in the spring.
This was the only revival of Giles Havergal’s staging from 1997. Most elements of the performance were fine, if you could accept the unpleasant colour combinations in Kenny Miller’s designs – clashing shades of bright red and green not to everyone’s taste. The singing was almost uniformly excellent. Sadly the main drawback was the failure on the part of conductor Wyn Davies to produce a sense of idiomatic Viennese style from the pit – it was all too relentlessly loud and unsubtle, and the singers sometimes forced more than was good for them or us.
