The Scotsman (1 March) stated "in the evening (of Saturday) an enjoyable performance was given to Verdi's well-known opera, Il Trovatore. Specially noteworthy were Madame Ina Hill as Leonora, Mr Walter Wheatly as Manrico and Miss Doris Woodall as the gipsy, Azucena. The favourite duets in the prison scene and beneath the tower walls were admirably sung. The audience gave the piece an entusiastic reception."
