"Tunefulness, a wealth of orchestral resource and colour, and a libretto which embodies familiar romantic convention, explain the wide popularity of verdi's Il trovatore, which was presented on Saturday evening in the Lyceum Theatre by the Carl Rosa Company. The rendering it received was of a robust and meritorious character. One might have desired on occasion a little more dramatic rapport between principals and chorus, and a little less of the conventional stage mannerisms; but these were minor points in what on the whole was a successful and satisfying performance.
"Miss Clara Simons made an animated Leonora, singing the elaborate music of the part, with its Italian phrasing and ornamentation, with intelligence and effect. Miss Phyllis Archibald, in the part of Azucena, was also successful, her singing and acting in the strenuous scene of the gypsy encampment being warmly applauded. Mtr Edward Davies was a thoroughly satisfactory Manrico, his singing being of a virile quality. The famous 'Home to our Mountains' duet with Azucena, and the prison scene, were effectively presented. Mr Hebden Foster was impressive as the Count. There was a large audience. The conductor was Mr Henriques de la Fuente."
