Born Sutton-in-Ashfield, 6 June 1842.
English tenor and manager.
J W Turner began his career by singing in concert parties, and toured widely abroad while still young. After a decade with the Carl Rosa organization, during which he quickly worked his way up to principal roles, he left to establish his own company in 1885. This toured with great success for several years, though the repertoire was distinctly unadventurous. Its last visit to Glasgow Theatre Royal came in 1908.
He also went in for theatrical management, at one stage acquiring the Grand Theatre, Birmingham.
