The only performance in Scotland of Attack on the Mill during 1917 was reviewed in the Scotsman (31 March).
"There was an excellent performance last night, one more added to the many fine things which the Carl Rosa artists have achieved during the fortnight now on the verge of closing. Miss Beatrice Miranda gave a spendid rendering of the character of the miller's daughter. It is a role in which, as in the whole work, a suggestion of the merely operatic would be a grave defect, and the way in which Miss Miranda preserved the impersonation on a purely dramatic plane was an object lesson in the delineation of character. The Dominique of Mr Hughes Macklin was as good as his Radames of Wednesday night, which is saying a great deal, and the Miller of Mr Arthur Winckworth was another fine study. Mr E.C. Hedmondt, as the young German soldier who sings of his home, was the finished artist he always is, and as Marcellina, the miller's housekeeper, Miss Ida Carton did excellently. There was good work by Mr Frederick Clendon as the German captain, and by Mr Ian Alexander as the French officer. The Carl Rosa Company has on this visit brought forward a number of valuable new recruits, and one of them, Miss Eva Turner, made a charming impression last night as Genevieve, for whom there is a rather trying number, very artistically rendered by Miss Turner, in the first act. Mr De La Funte conducted, and an attentive audience became increasingly enthusiastic as the opera developed."
