Baritone.
William Dever was a leading baritone with Carl Rosa before joining the Moody-Manners company.
His repertoire included Mozart (Almaviva); Meyerbeer (de Nevers); Balfe (Arnheim); Wallace (Don José, Commandant); Verdi (Luna; Amonasro); Wagner (Wolfram, Telramund, Kurwenal, Beckmesser, Alberich); Gounod (Valentin, Mercutio); Bizet (Dancaïre, Escamillo); Saint-Saëns (High Priest); Mascagni (Alfio); Leoncavallo (Silvio, Tonio); Puccini (Schaunard; Sharpless, Scarpia).
It may be that he was a relation of Mr J Dever, who was a bass in the Arthur Rousbey company of 1890, when he sang the important, if brief, role of King Charles in Maritana. Perhaps even the same person under a changed name?
