1850-1931

Mezzo-soprano.

Josephine Yorke enjoyed an extensive career as a leading mezzo-soprano, working with the Carl Rosa company in its early years.

Leaving to spend several seasons with the J W Turner group, later on she returned to the Carl Rosa fold.

Certain parts seem to have remained staples throughout her career, particularly trouser-roles that were in constant demand - Siébel, Lazarillo and Frédéric, and the frequent Azucena and Queen of the Gypsies.

Perhaps surprisingly, Yorke does not seem to have taken on Carmen, but her vividly dramatic parts nevertheless included Ortrud in Lohengrin and Fidès in Le Prophète.
