Twenty years after the last performances of the classic Anthony Besch staging, the company plucked up its courage to have another go at Der Rosenkavalier. The choice of director, an inspired one, fell on David McVicar, and the entire enterprise was difficult to fault. Richard Armstrong drew wonderful sounds from the orchestra (which did not exist last time the opera was performed here), and the singing cast contained several performances which approached perfection - Joan Rodgers, Stella Doufexis, Lisa Milne, Peter Rose. The staging was revived twice by Scottish Opera, and was also performed by Opera North and ENO. Just one example of the fresh approach to the piece can be mentioned - the Marschallin's page was not the usual exotically-dressed child, but a more mature and knowing figure altogether.
