English translator.
Charles Jefferys' reputation rests entirely on his singing translation for Verdi's Il trovatore, undoubtedly one of a handful of the most popular operas throughout the century after its launch.
The operatic works he translated into usable English versions included Donizetti's Anna Bolena (1847); Verdi's Luisa Miller (1858) and Il trovatore (1856) and, perhaps rather less well-known, Battista's Ermelinda (1856).
