Barton M'Guckin was a successful and highly versatile lyric tenor who studied initially in Armagh and Dublin before going to Milan. His concert career began in 1874 and he made his operatic debut with Carl Rosa at Birmingham, staying with the company from 1878 to 1887. He had a further stint with the company from 1889 to 1896. Between those two periods he toured in the USA. With Carl Rosa he sang a wide range of roles culminating with Otello (1892). He was Des Grieux in the first British performance of Manon (Liverpool 1885). Major roles created in new British operas included Phoebus in Esmeralda (Thomas 1883), Orso in Colomba (Mackenzie 1883) and Voldemar in Nadeshda (Thomas 1885).
