The St Magnus International Festival has generally managed to find some space for opera and this year is no exception. An Eye for an Eye, described as a new opera in cabaret form, is being performed at the Arts Theatre on 25 June in a co-production with Bath International Music Festival. Miss Donnithorne's Maggot, Peter Maxwell Davies' iconic song cycle, or work of music theatre, for mezzo soprano and ensemble, has been recorded and the DVD (recorded at the Festival last year) is being launched. The musical programme is of the usual high standard and includes some music drawn from opera, for example the prelude to The Cunning Little Vixen. The American soprano Christine Brewer will sing Wagner's Liebestod as part of a concert by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and is also to give a masterclass. Read more about Eye for an Eye here.
