Rigoletto is to return again to the Scottish stage by virtue of a new production by Scottish Opera. We are promised not only a strong principal cast, but a male chorus of twenty-three and sixty-three musicians. Is our national company saving up their best for the last mainstage production of a great season?
Verdi's powerful opera has frequently been performed in Scotland, first being seen in Glasgow in 1867. Italian touring companies presented it at various times in the nineteenth century, and Carl Rosa performed it many times. On three occasions, different visiting companies have performed it at the Edinburgh Festival, with the great Renata Scotto playing Gilda in one production.
