Opera Scotland

New Opera Company for Scotland

Posted 19 Nov 2009

Scottish Youth Opera is a welcome new venture. Rehearsals are being held for a double bill – an unusual pairing of Dido and Aeneas and Pagliacci. We are promised six performances in April in this, their first season. Performances have been confirmed for Glasgow (two), Inverness, Pitlochry and Dunfermline. At the time of writing, confirmation of one date is still awaited, but the rest are now in the ‘Opera Scotland’ diary.

Their mission statement explains:

Scottish Youth Opera is committed to providing young people with a first class opera experience and for them to share their experiences through performances with other young people around Scotland, thus helping to build the future audience of opera.

Their purpose is clearly stated too:

We provide a vocally safe platform for youngsters to enter into the wonderful world of opera and fill the gap between youth and further studies; Scottish Youth Opera provides people with the skills necessary to excel in a wide range of opera & musical theatre productions. We are a truly unique organization designed around teenagers and are the first of its kind in this country.

Scottish Youth Opera’s website can be found at ScottishYouthOpera.org.uk.

The team at Opera Scotland are delighted that we are being launched together. We offer Scottish Youth Opera the heartiest of welcomes and every success!
