Glasgow's historic Theatre Royal, home to Scottish Opera, is being transformed for the 21st century through the addition of new facilities including arts education rooms, a roof-top terrace, a new café and greatly improved circulation with spacious new arrangements for access.
In what many see as a poor economic climate, the company has acquired an adjacent plot of land, commissioned a striking design, and raised almost all the money needed to renew this iconic building - home to many opera premieres over the years.
Launching a fund-raising campaign in respect of the balance - only £450,000 still needs to be raised to reach the required total of £12.45m - Scottish Opera's Alex Reedijk caled for all those who have enjoyed a night out in this remarkable Scottish theatre to consider what help they can give to close this gap.
Construction is to be complete and the theatre open in time to host events during Glasgow's 2014 Commonwealth Games next summer.
