Jane Harrington as Eurydice and Nicholas Sharratt as Orpheus

Orpheus in the Underworld

Posted 9 Sep 2011

Scottish Opera's long awaited version of Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld opened on 8th September in Rory Bremner's specially written new translation in a joint production with Northern Ireland Opera. Oliver Mears' new production promises to give this classic piece new life. When a touring company from Paris put on the first-ever performance in Scotland (at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow in 1870), the Glasgow Herald critic thought the 'production racy, spicy and at times vulgar - well suited to certain tastes, which seek merely the satisfaction of the moment'.  Read more about the famous singer playing Eurydice on that occasion here.  Click through 'What's On' on the right of our home page to learn more about performances, or here to learn about the opera itself.
