Love, jealousy, witchcraft and war: all these we are promised in the Edinburgh International Festival's presentation of Marc-Antoine Charpentier's opera, staged by Les Arts Florissants and conducted by William Christie. David et Jonathas is one of Charpentier's most dramatic stage works, full of stirring music and passionate arias that convey its achingly poignant story. Christie's reputation for conducting Charpentier's works is second to none - he even named his exceptional period ensemble, Les Arts Florissants, after another of the composer's operas.
