Don Giovanni, a young, arrogant and sexually promiscuous nobleman, abuses and outrages everyone else in the cast of Mozart's great opera, Don Giovanni. The plot is based on the story of Don Juan, a legendary Casanova figure. With a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, the stirring drama has both captivated and repelled audiences ever since it was written. While the music certainly has some difficulties for performers, George Bernard Shaw, a knowledgeable critic, still lamented the poor standard of many of the performances he heard. However it is the complexity in the presentation of the drama that has caused the work to develop a reputation for being near-impossible.
This new production by Scottish Opera is undertaken by an experienced team, led by Sir Thomas Allen, who was himself for many years an outstanding performer in the title role.
