Rare Double Bill at Haddington

Posted 30 Aug 2019

Now is the time for opera fans to get their diaries out. Scottish Opera offers a single opportunity to see two very unusual Italian pieces, each containing just two singing roles.

When and where

The performances are on Friday 20 September in St Mary's Parish Church, Haddington, at 7.30pm as part of this year's Lammermuir Festival.

The opportunity

Live opera performances can be hard to find and attend. The works are not like the proverbial buses, scheduled so that another comes along in some minutes.  Even when they are performed, life may get in the way and other commitments prevent attendance.  Sometimes fans have to wait decades for the chance to hear one.

Perhaps surprisingly, Mascagni's Zanetto has never been performed in Scotland before, and is a gentle autumnal romance full of good things. So it alone should be well worth catching.

The second part of the evening is devoted to Wolf-Ferrari's delightful comedy, Susanna's Secret, a work very rarely played nowadays.

Perhaps this is because of the need to provide a government health warning!
