In a remarkable triple bill Fringe-goers will be able to see not just that rarity, William Walton's The Bear, a delightfully frivolous piece of fun, but two new operas, picked from a competition judged by Jonathan Dove. They are Red as Blood by Joel Rust and BARE by Philip Ashworth. Musicians from Helios Opera and Melos Sinfonia will be conducted by Oliver Zeffman, shortly to take up a place at the St Petersburg Conservatoire. The director is Ella Marchment, whose experience already includes work at the Buxton Festival, Leipzig Opera and the International Opera Theatre in Italy. The triple bill opens at the Rose Theatre, Kingston on 31 July, then visits the Sage at Gateshead, the Fringe and then finishes the tour back in London at St Cyprian's, Clarence Gate - hence the title The Bear Goes Walkabout.
