sir John Tomlinson

Great Wagnerian in Edinburgh

Posted 15 Oct 2012

The Wagner Society of Scotland, a registered charity, is undertaking a worthy initiative - raising scholarship funds to pay for a young singer to study at Bayreuth in Bavaria.  Sir John Tomlinson, a noted Wagnerian, and a veteran of many performances at the Festival, which is performed in Wagner's own theatre, is to give a recital on Monday 19 November in St Mary's Cathedral, Palmerston Place, Edinburgh.  Sir John has appeared with all the major British opera companies. He first sang with Scottish Opera as a student in 1968, in the chorus of Götterdämmerung, returning eventually for Billy Budd. His Edinburgh Festival performances include a Wagner concert and a performance of Tippett's A Child of Our Time. Accompanied by Lionel Friend on the piano, he is to perform a recital consisting of Wotan's Farewell from Die Walküre and The Narration of Gurnemanz from Parsifal.  Tickets are available from the box office at the Queen's Hall, www.thequeenshall.net
