Scottish Opera's new production of Flying Dutchman, staged to mark the bicentenary of Wagner's birth in the company's fiftieth anniversary year, has been generally acclaimed. Not only is it relocated to Scotland, as Wagner originally intended, but the action has been updated to the 1970s and set in Peterhead. Erik the huntsman becomes George, a minister, and other minor changes are made. Arguments about the updating of an opera invariably hinge on distortions introduced to the logic of the plot. Harry Fehr's production carries matters through triumphantly, and the cast perform magnificently.
