Posted 19 Aug 2011

The first of the three fully staged productions in this year's Edinburgh International Festival opens on August 19 at 8pm at the Festival Theatre. Sung in Mandarin with English supertitles, the opera is a Chinese adaptation of Hamlet. The Shanghai Peking Opera Troupe is a virtuoso ensemble dedicated to preserving the ancient artistry of Chinese opera and extending its repertoire beyond  traditional boundaries. With gorgeously embroidered costumes, extraordinary acrobatics and brilliant music, Peking opera offers a unique combination of sweeping, symbolic dance, graceful singing, subtle mime and compelling martial arts.
