As part of their fiftieth anniversary season, Scottish Opera takes Verdi's La traviata on tour around Scotland. Annilese Miskimmon, the Irish director, has set this small scale version in 1950s Paris, "where men were men and women were women." This intimate production has already gained praise for the gutsy realism of an opera that has shocked since its first appearance. The story is as modern as it is universal. Violetta leaves her life as an escort or prostitute for her love with Alfredo, yet is torn between personal fulfilment and society's attitudes. Class structure, family tensions and passions are explored in dramatic and moving music. Read our listings for more details here.
