Carousel

Opera North in Edinburgh

Posted 2 Jun 2015

Opera North bring their highly praised production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel to Scotland.

Directed by Jo Davies, one of the greatest of Broadway musicals is brought vividly to life, with set and costume designs by Olivier Award winner Anthony Ward (The King’s Speech, ENRON, Oklahoma!, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang). Young baritone Keith Higham plays the carousel barker Billy Bigelow, Gillene Butterfield returns as Julie Jordan, and Edinburgh-born Beverley Grant plays their daughter Louise (and principal dancer).

The full Broadway score is ravishingly recreated by the forces of more than 40 musicians from the critically acclaimed Orchestra of Opera North, led by conductor James Holmes, with a chorus of over 30 singers. Based in Leeds, Opera North is England’s national opera company in the North of England.

An instant hit with audiences and critics alike, Opera North's Carousel has been praised as an “exhilarating” show which “does great honour to a rich piece of musical theatre” (Daily Telegraph); “a real masterpiece […] totally charming” (Mail on Sunday); and “tremendously uplifting” (Financial Times).
