Iain Paterson is to sing Wotan in the new Ring Cycle at Bayreuth in 2020, according to a recent report. Iain was unable to confirm this to OperaScotland, but did say he is performing there in Das Rheingold this year and again in 2017.
If so, this will be quite an achievement. Sir Donald MacIntyre, New Zealand born, is said to be the first British singer to perform Wotan at Bayreuth, in 1973 and subsequently. The great John Tomlinson, Lancashire born and the greatest Wotan of his generation, took the role there from 1988.
So let us hope Iain Paterson, whose reputation has been steadily growing, can become the first Scot to win the distinction of singing this great role in the cycle at the Bayreuth Festival. See our earlier interview with him here.
And now comes the sales pitch - Iain is giving a concert with Scottish Opera on Sunday 28 February at 4pm in the Theatre Royal. Iain's long awaited return to perform in his homeland promises to be a great occasion. Click and book your ticket here (click the red pin to go to the venue).
